Drawings for Versailles, Twenty years of acquisitions

Cultural

From June, 1, 2021, the Palace of Versailles will present an exhibition devoted to all the drawings acquired from 2000 to 2020 for its Graphic Arts Department.

With more than 30,000 works, the collection of the Graphic Arts Department of the Palace of Versailles remains largely unknown. The exhibition Drawings for Versailles, Twenty Years of Acquisitions will highlight around one hundred works: pastels, gouaches, watercolours. . . kept in reserve because of their great fragility.

This exhibition will present a gallery of portraits and scenes of court life, some of which are astonishing: Louis XIV portrayed as a Roman emperor, Charles Perrault drawn by Charles Le Brun, caricatures and freehand drawings. It will also unveil preparatory drawings for the great painted decorations of the Palace of Versailles: from the ceilings of the Royal Chapel and the Salon of Hercules to the overdoors of the King's bedroom and the Salon of Diana. Finally, it will highlight the views, plans and architectural projects of the Palace of Versailles from the Ancien Régime to the beginning of the 20th century.
