Exposition Les chitas d'Alcobaça à Jouy-en-Josas : Collection Pereira de Sampaio

Get ready for a journey into the Portuguese textile decorative arts.
On the occasion of the France-Portugal season, the Musée de la Toile de Jouy is highlighting the Pereira de Sampaio collection of printed cotton fabrics: the chitas of Alcobaça.

Manufactured between the end of the 18th century and throughout the 19th century in Alcobaça*, chitas, like the toiles de Jouy, contributed to the influence of their territory and still influence contemporary creation today.

A remarkable collection of abundantly decorated bedspreads, scarves and shawls bear witness to this major production of Portuguese printed textiles.

Through more than a hundred pieces from the Pereira de Sampaio collection, this exhibition will be based on an original presentation of this traditional Portuguese fabric, considered to be the most renowned printed cotton fabric in Portugal. And yet! It remains unknown in France.

* Alcobaça is a city in western Portugal, developed around an important monastery of the Cistercian Order.
