The Coach Gallery
Behind the walls of the Palace of Versailles’ Great Stables lies one of the most impressive collections in Europe: the Gallery of Coaches, a true showcase of splendor dedicated to the ceremonial vehicles of France’s greatest historical moments.
Here, each carriage is far more than just a means of transport: it is a total work of art, born from the expertise of the greatest artists and craftsmen of its time. Sculpted, gilded, painted, and embroidered with exceptional precision, these masterpieces of wood and bronze evoke the magnificence of ceremonies of the Ancien Régime, the Empire, and the Restoration.
In a completely redesigned scenography covering nearly 1,000 m², the visit takes you to the heart of French dynastic history. Admire the sumptuous gala berlin from Napoleon I’s wedding, the coronation coach of Charles X, the imposing and solemn funeral coach of Louis XVIII, as well as the elegant carriages of Marie-Antoinette’s children, the fairy-tale sleds, and the sedan chairs of the 18th century.
But this collection is not only a feast for the eyes: it also bears witness to the technological innovations of the time in terms of traction, suspension, and comfort. From the first coupés to convertible carriages, these vehicles tell a story of ingenuity.
Imagine the procession: around forty richly decorated coaches, moving at a slow pace, framed by caparisoned horses, parading through the city to the cheers of the people. All at a speed of 3 km/h, accompanied by the rhythmic clatter of hooves and the shouts of an astonished crowd.
