Hôtel de Ville - Versailles, ville militaire
From November 6 to 18, discover a new commemorative exhibition highlighting the military presence in Versailles.
More than just a garrison town, Versailles is a military town: when the king and his court moved to Versailles in 1685, they were accompanied by regiments responsible for their security; camps and then barracks appeared, and military architecture shaped the town. During the Empire and throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the Satory plateau was occupied by military installations. Today, although some buildings in the city have disappeared, the military presence remains strong and is more than ever one of the driving forces behind our city, forming part of a dynamic process of technical research and development in the field of land equipment. The national gendarmerie also plays an important role in our city with the presence of the Mobile Gendarmerie Armored Group (GBGM) and the National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN).
