Opéra Royal - Bach: PASSION SELON SAINT JEAN
Today, it is the finest children's choir, particularly dazzling in its repertoire of German sacred music, which the boys perform with the joy of singing in their own language: unforgettable!
Of Bach's two surviving Passions, the St John Passion was the first to be composed and was revised several times by the Cantor for various performances between 1724 and 1747.
At St Thomas's in Leipzig, Bach had a choir and orchestra that were sufficiently experienced to perform the virtuoso arias and choruses of this rich Passion. He pushed the rhetorical effects to the maximum, highlighting the dramatic and doloristic text that it was meant to embody. It was by far his most extensive composition at the time and remains one of the public's favourites today for its extraordinary humanity.
Barely a year after his arrival in Leipzig, Bach presented this first great masterpiece for Good Friday in 1724. During these exceptional evenings, you will therefore be celebrating the 300th anniversary of the creation of this masterful work. The Royal Opera Orchestra, conducted by Gaétan Jarry, will welcome renowned soloists and the formidable Tölzer Knabenchor.
