A rich merchant, Mr Perrichon, his wife and their daughter Henriette set off for the first time by train to Chamonix, followed - what a happy coincidence - by Daniel and Armand, both interested in the hand of the young lady.Théatre Montansier - Le voyage de Monsieur Perrichon
The two men begin a benevolent but relentless struggle to seduce their father, whose comical vanity and ingratitude will be put to the test during the journey. Our heroes clumsily seek to take pleasure in discomfort, frenzy and fantasy, while maintaining the balance required by their environment. Labiche, of course, has fun flaying the great romantic mythology of travel: the middle-class people he likes to sketch have the means to travel and take pride in their epics.
Here, as in a dream, everything speeds up, mishaps accumulate and discoveries are made. Labiche's play interweaves the adventure of a first tourist trip, gliding along in a witty and humorous line, with a deeper inner journey, an unexpected movement of the soul, full of wisdom and nobility. That's how Mr Perrichon became a new man!
